Happy Thanksgiving from Veritas Prep!

TurkeyThanksgiving is a time to reflect on the past year, give thanks for all the good that is in your life… and be completely stressed out. Between gathering ingredients to roast the perfect turkey, formulating your plan of attack for Black Friday shopping, arranging your holiday decorations (Didn’t we just finish Halloween?), and mentally preparing yourself to interact with family members you may or may not be excited to see, add to that the stress of preparing for your educational future.

Whether you are studying to take the GMAT, GRE, SAT or ACT, or are tweaking your dream school application for the tenth time, the holidays are most certainly not the most relaxing time of the year.

At Veritas Prep, we’d like to make your holidays just a little less stressful by offering you our biggest discounts of the year for Black Friday: now through November 26, you can save up to $1,000 on test prep and MBA admissions consulting services, and up to $1,500 on college admissions counseling from Veritas Prep! This sale won’t last forever, so check out our discounts below and take advantage of the savings before it’s too late!

Want the Best in ACT Prep? Now We Offer It!

ACT PrepIt was just 18 months ago when we shook up the college test prep space by announcing Veritas Prep SAT 2400. Since then, thousands of high school students and their parents have discovered what makes Veritas Prep special when it comes to tackling standardized tests: The best instructors rigorously applying a proven system for success that any student can learn.

Now, our march on the college prep space continues with the launch of Veritas Prep ACT 36. Nearly a year ago our work began, and it started with consulting with leading school districts and education leadership programs such as University of Michigan’s Graduate School of Education to design the perfect learning environment for high school students wishing to excel on the ACT. With multiple Master of Education degree holders on our development team, we identified the three things that every student needs to excel on the ACT: Skill, Strategy, and Performance.

To keep the energy level high in the classroom, our program is segmented into three sections. First, we cover the essential Skills necessary to navigate the content in every ACT question. Next, we introduce a Veritas Prep ACT 36 strategy to simplify the processing requirements on tougher test questions. Finally, students have a chance to synthesize the skills and strategies they’ve just learned on real ACT sections, which are subsequently reviewed in detail with an instructor who has scored in the 99th percentile on the real ACT.

Excelling on the ACT takes work, and you can’t work if you’re not getting enough face time with your instructor. While most leading ACT prep companies offer just 18 hours of classroom time, ACT 36 offers 36 hours of classroom time. This allows us to start at a more elementary level (ensuring that you will indeed master the basic content you need to know, but then also progress to a much more advanced level than what Kaplan, The Princeton Review, and others allow. If you really want an ACT score in the 30s, this is how you do it.

Veritas Prep ACT 36 is available as an in-person course, a live online course, and private one-on-one tutoring. Take a look at our ACT prep programs and see how our team can help you on the ACT starting today!

Test Prep and Admissions: The Best of 2013

There goes another year. Faster than you can say “99th-percentile instructors,” 2013 has come and gone, leaving in its wake a trail of excellent Veritas Prep blog articles. As we start to wrap up the year here at Veritas Prep HQ, wrap our Secret Santa gifts, and prepare to break in the new hires at our annual holiday party, we thought this would be a good time to share some of our biggest news and most popular articles from the past year.

We hope that this blog has provided you with some useful insights as you have prepared the GMAT or SAT, or as you have slaved over your applications. Sometimes we have a little fun, and sometimes we veer off topic to talk about what interests us, but everything written here comes from the same place: We want to help you get into the best possible universities and graduate schools you can get into!

Introducing the Free Veritas Prep SAT Practice Test

SAT Practice TestAdmit it.  If you’re going to take the SAT, you want to know how well you might score before taking the actual test.  But you want to know NOW, not after a 4-hour practice test.  Luckily for you, what Veritas Prep has learned from its over 10 years of experience with the computer-adaptive standardized tests is that you can actually reach a very accurate prediction of a test-taker’s performance with a smaller set of questions than is currently on the full SAT.  Just like how Nate Silver could predict every state correctly for the 2012 presidential election using representative sampling, a well-designed practice test can accurately predict your SAT score in less than half the time of taking the full test itself.

This concept is how the Veritas Prep Free SAT Practice Test is able to give you an accurate prediction of your real SAT score even though it is half the length of a full SAT.  The practice test has enough questions with varying difficulty levels from each of the three multiple-choice sections (Critical Reading, Writing and Math) to give our scoring algorithm enough data to predict your likely SAT score with a high level of confidence.  Now you can finally get satisfactory answers to both questions “How will I do” and “How long is this going to take?”

After you complete the test, you will get a full breakdown of your performance by section, a prediction of your scaled score and your percentile vs. college-bound seniors.  You’ll also be able to compare your score to other users who have taken the Veritas Prep SAT Practice Test to see how well you did against Veritas Prep students, who are typically in the top 10% of students.  Additionally, each question has an explanation of the correct and incorrect answers so that you will be able to review which questions you got wrong and why.  So you will not only get an assessment of your abilities, you will also learn how to solve the questions you struggled with.

So why is Veritas Prep giving away this tool for free?  First of all, we’re confident that we’ve put together the best SAT program available and specifically designed for students who are already in or aspiring to be in the top 10% of test-takers and want to get into competitive colleges.  It’s why we only hire instructors from the top 1% of test-takers!  So naturally, we’re hoping that students who are searching for free SAT practice resources will learn about us and eventually enroll in our awesome SAT program.

More importantly, we are committed to offering great practice resources to our students and are constantly trying to improve the resources we have available.  Our SAT Practice Test isn’t just an assessment tool; it’s also a data collection tool that helps us measure, analyze, refine and ultimately improve our SAT questions.  We acknowledge that the College Board is second to none when it comes to accurate and realistic practice SAT questions—College Board owns the SAT test after all.  But College Board’s advantage comes from the fact that they collect a ton of data through offering an “experimental” section on each SAT test which does not count towards students’ scores, but helps the test writers see how new questions perform “in the wild.”  This data is used to gauge which questions are easy, medium or hard and which questions are the best differentiators of SAT skill.  The questions that are not performing well based on the data—maybe they are confusing or simply unfair questions—get thrown out and the good ones remain and get promoted to real SAT tests in future years.

In order to have the best questions and the best practice content, we at Veritas Prep have committed ourselves to “Think Like the Testmaker”, replicating the SAT by reverse-engineering the process that College Board uses to create the test.  The data we collect from the free practice test will allow us to offer realistic practice, identify challenging questions, discover common traps that students fall into and create better practice tools for our students.  So, as a result, by using our free practice test, you’re helping to make Veritas Prep’s SAT 2400 program even better.

What are you waiting for? Click here to check out the Veritas Prep SAT Free Practice Test and find out how well you would do on the real SAT!

Nominate a High School Teacher Who Deserves Recognition!

Perhaps it started on a January day in Chicago when elementary school students greeted teacher Frankie Beecroft, recently named Veritas Prep’s Worldwide Instructor of the Year, with an enthusiastic “Good Morning, Teacher of the World!” But maybe it started well before that, in classrooms and at dinner tables in Missouri and Michigan, New Jersey and Norway as the students who would become the leaders of Veritas Prep were inspired by teachers. Whatever the genesis, our lifelong appreciation of teachers and our firm belief that they deserve recognition for their yeoman efforts has led us here.
